Why did you want to be a judge and what advice do you have for the competitors?

Don’t follow what others have done. Be yourselves – unique and genuine – just like your project.

How do you think an event like America's Top Project can help project developers and investors?

This event engenders thought leadership and cutting-edge results. Bringing the best and the brightest together truly elevates the industry and raises our standards to new heights. OpportunityZone.com events provide an environment that fosters collaboration, creates leaders and results in new partnerships.

What is your professional background?

I am a tax, trust and estate planning attorney by background.

Please tell us about your involvement in the Opportunity Zone industry?

I work with clients on tax and estate planning. Many times Opportunity Zones are an excellent strategy due to the tax benefits, but sometimes the role of the OZ investment as an integral part of the family legacy is even more important to the client. I speak on this topic and sit on the Editorial Board for Opportunity Zone Magazine.

Why do you think the Opportunity Zone program is important? What do you think it can achieve?

First of all, the Opportunity Zone initiative shines a spotlight on underprivileged areas within our midst. Further, the program provides tax benefits for those who can develop and invest in solutions targeted to improving the economic circumstances within those designated areas. The tax benefits serve as a reward to those who invest their time and money in the pursuit of transforming a community and the lives of those who live and work there.

What impact did you see the pandemic have on the OZ industry?

Business switched to a virtual platform as the norm. This provides ease of access to enhanced communication, exchange of ideas, and real time presentation and deliberation of different projects available for investment.

What are some current trends you are seeing in the OZ market?

More focus on the operating business itself and creating jobs. It’s so much more about using your power for good.

What are your thoughts about increasing the reporting requirements in the OZ industry?

The regulations are already complex. I don’t want investors to shy away because of the sheer burden of reporting.

What are you most looking forward to being one of the distinguished ATP judges? How are you preparing?

I am looking forward to experiencing the excitement of each team as they lay out the most critical and compelling components of their project. I am researching different projects that are popping up right now as well as past projects to see what has worked and what hasn’t.
